Sri Lanka is the 81st largest export economy in the world in 2017, Sri Lanka exported USD 11,360.4mn and imported USD 20,979.8mn, resulting in a negative trade balance of USD 9,619mn in 2017. The GDP of Sri Lanka was USD 87.2bn and its GDP per capita was USD 4,065.

 

The top exports of Sri Lanka are Tea (USD 1,513.10mn), Women's Undergarments (USD 599.10 M), Women's Undergarments (Knitted or crocheted) USD 582.16mn, Women suits (Knitted or crocheted) USD 495.88, Women’s or girls' jackets and blazers, Dresses, Skirts, trousers, breeches etc (USD 466.91mn).

 

Its top imports are Petroleum oils & oils obtained from bituminous minerals (USD 2,091.38mn), Gold (USD 650.20mn), Other knitted or crocheted fabrics (USD 612.85mn), Oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude oil (USD 603.10mn), Motor cars & other motor vehicles (USD547.60mn) and Cement (USD 526.28mn).

 

The top export destinations of Sri Lanka are the United States (USD 2,911.81mn), the United Kingdom (USD1, 035.14mn), India (USD 689.48mn), Germany (USD 538.70mn) and Italy (USD 529.86mn).

The top import origins are India (USD 4,495.99mn), China (USD 4,191.22mn), U.A.E. (USD 1, 564.56mn), Singapore (USD 1, 292.63mn) and Japan (USD1, 038.52mn). 

 

Export Figures

In 2017 Sri Lanka exported USD11,360.4mn, making it the 81st largest exporter in the world. Earnings from exports increased by 10.2 percent to USD 11,360mn in 2017, from USD 10,310mn in 2016. The most recent exports are led by Textiles and Garments which represents 44.3 % of the total exports, followed by tea which account for 13.5%.

 

Import Figures

Sri Lanka’s Imports rose significantly in 2017, compared to the marginal increase recorded in 2016 and the reduction in 2015, making it the 71st largest importer in the world.

Expenditure on imports increased by 9.4 per cent to USD 20,980 million in 2017, recording the historically highest value for imports, mainly due to higher fuel imports.
